Void Music Cabinet
Originally created for handling musicians sheet music and accessories, this second example has evolved as a focus piece for use in a range of settings.
Void 2 utilises the philosophy of the Danish master Finn Juhl, who proposed the separation of the structural elements from the overall design.
As with all my work, the piece features the natural figure of the timber itself to create a unique appearance. Again the design references both Scandinavian and Modernist origins, whilst adopting the best of current and traditional techniques. Stability is ensured by the use of veneered board in the carcass, edged with profiled, solid, matching timber, in this case American Cherry. The drawer fronts are in highly figured English Sycamore, grown and felled in our own garden before being air seasoned for four years, with solid cherry, hand dovetailed, carcasses. The drawer bottoms are in solid sycamore with a wild figure, perhaps to catch the user by surprise. A light appearance is achieved by the use of chamfered, inset drawer fronts, leaving only a minimal margin of carcass visible from the front.
The descrete structural frame is in English Beech, using the faint pink tint in the lighter timber to harmonise with the stronger hues of the cherry.
