Euro-style Back Door

Anyone traveling in mainland Europe cannot fail to notice the explosion of modernist design in housing and public buildings. Even low-cost housing is likely to show Art Nouveau, Deco, or Modernist traces in its doors and windows in contrast to the faux historical pastiche we endure here, especially in the UPVC market. The infamous “Carolina’ design springs to mind with the fanlight incorrectly inserted in the top of the door, making a mockery of the original design.

This door was designed after traveling in Belgium and Germany and taking note of what I found there. In this case the design flows seamlessly between the main door and adjacent half door to create a coherent whole. It was made in Douglas Fir (also known as Columbian or Oregon Pine) for weather resistance, triple glazed, and fitted with German multi-point locking gear. The European standard of 68mm thick gives a useful pointer to the differences in design ethos and windows were made in similar style to match.
